Saffron Walden Town Council is the Market authority for the town by virtue of the Charter granted to the town, originally as long ago as 1141. The Council’s market rights were reaffirmed by Statutory Instrument no. 1123 of 1979.

A market is held in the Market Place every Tuesday and Saturday (except for Bank Holidays) throughout the year. A special late night shopping market is held on a Friday in December.

Charges for the market are based on the size of a trader's stall. The current charge is 53p per square foot per month.
