THE CLOSE GARDENS  (20 May 2009)

The Close Gardens in the High Street were given to the Town in 1934 when The Close, a 400 year old, Tudor, timber-framed building, was dismantled and later re-built in West Sussex.

Maintenance of the Gardens has recently been taken over by the Town Council and an improvement programme has been undertaken. A water supply has now been provided and substantial re-planting has taken place on the east side of the Gardens. Old shrubs have been removed from the south beds and extensive re-planting of these beds will take place in the Spring.  Work to repair the wall on the path leading to the Church should be started in the near future.

In addition, the Town Council will be providing disabled access to the Gardens by removing the existing step and gravel path and replacing these with disabled-friendly surfaces.

The Town Council has been helped on this project by local residents who have been active in re-planting this area.
